Marek Jeziorski, Poland’s former ambassador to Albania, has made one of the renowned Albanian author Ismail Kadare’s most famous novels, The Chronicle of Stone, accessible to Polish readers through a recently published translation.
Jeziorski, who served as ambassador to Tirana from 2012 to 2016, utilized his extensive knowledge of the Albanian language to introduce Kadare’s work to his fellow Poles.
Apart from his diplomatic career, Jeziorski collaborated with Jerzy Wiśniewski on the creation of the Polish-Albanian and Albanian-Polish Dictionary. Additionally, he was honored with the “For Special Civil Merits” decoration by the President of the Republic of Albania in 2016, and he remains associated with the Albanian Institute for International Studies.
The translation of Kadare’s book by Jeziorski has been released by the Wydawnictwo Akademickie SEDNO Publishing House, an independent academic and literary publisher founded in 2011.
The publishing house focuses on a wide range of publications, encompassing scholarly works, Polish contemporary authors, and translations from various languages, including English, French, German, Russian, Slovene, Croat, Serb, Bosnian, and most recently Albanian.
Their books receive nationwide distribution and are reviewed in esteemed literary journals, online magazines, and radio programs.
“Chronicle in Stone” (“Kronikë në gur” in Albanian) is a masterpiece by Ismail Kadare, Albania’s internationally acclaimed writer and recipient of numerous literary awards. Originally published in Albanian in 1971, with an English translation following 16 years later, the novel vividly portrays life in a small Albanian city during World War II.
