The Global Albanians Foundation was established in the US in 2018 to create a new approach to Albanian diaspora philanthropy. They use an online crowdfunding platform to allow funders to contribute direction to a range of projects, in places they want to reach. They support initiatives in Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Presheva with the mission to encourage development, growth, and to work on social, economic, and cultural issues.
Their online platform allows for thousands of people to support thousands of Albanian non-profit organisations. Following the recent earthquake in Durres that was felt throughout the area, they are launching a new campaign.
Today is Giving Tuesday, one day a year where people are encouraged to give more back to their communities and the world. Created in 2012, it was an idea to encourage people to do good and since then it has developed into a global movement, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generously.
The Global Albanians Foundation today released the following statement:
“Are you from Durres, been to Durres, or care about Durres? Do you live far away, and feel the calling to help after last week’s earthquake? Well, this is your chance to shine and help tens of thousands of fellow Albanians in need, right now. We are going to go viral — Albanian style — and you’re going to feel great about it when it’s over as if you were at a big Albanian wedding for 12 hours.
The objective is to create thousands of Giving Tuesday Fundraisers for the Global Albanians Foundation on that will last all week and raise $1 million.
We don’t want you to just ask people to donate. We need all of you to create fundraisers. Why?? Because that is the only way to reach a large network of Albanians AND non-Albanian donors.
If we just create a few fundraisers we miss the power and magic of social media to reach an exponentially larger audience of non-Albanians whom we all have in our networks.
This opportunity is never going to come again — Giving Tuesday, which is the largest donation day of the year one week after a major earthquake that rocked Albania. It’s now or never.”
You can donate, or set up a fundraiser here.
