A call for blood donors in Tirana, Vlore, Sarande and Durres!

Last week I gave blood for the first time in my life at the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Laprake.

I did so because I became aware of a national shortage of blood in Albania. Blood stocks are always low here, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people’s fear of setting foot inside a medical facility, stocks have reduced even more.

It has resulted in a situation where stocks are so low that children with thalassemia throughout the country are being turned away from treatment. These children require transfusions every two weeks else they risk health complications such as bone deformities, enlarged spleen, slowed growth, heart problems, and a higher risk of infection. The problem is especially severe in Lushnje and Fier where there is a higher rate of the condition.

When I learned this, I was motivated to do something. I decided to organize an event whereby foreigners living in Albania, donate blood to raise awareness. Following the success of that event last week in Tirana, I thought “why not arrange a blood drive in other cities?” There are as many as 15,000 foreigners living in Albania and I know many of them would jump at the chance to give something back to their host country.

After all, we live here, enjoy the beautiful weather, lovely food, stunning countryside, and generous hospitality of Albanian people, why not give something back?

Just one donation can save up to three lives. If you donate twice a year, that is six people you have helped with very little effort. Giving blood is a wonderful, easy, and simple gift and what’s more, it is safe.

So, in time for Valentines Day, I have organised the following blood donation drives:

  • Vlore:  Friday 12 February 10am-2pm at the State Hospital. The blood bank is on the premises of the hospital but in a separate section. Staff from Tirana will attend to take the blood of those who wish to donate. All COVID precautions will be observed.
  • Tirana: Saturday 13 February 10am-2pm at the Blood Transfusion Centre in Laprake. It is located to the left of the main gate/entrance to the Trauma Hospital.
  • Durres: Saturday 13 February 10am-2pm at the Palace of Culture opposite the Municipality.
  • Sarande: Saturday 13 February 10am-2pm at the Shtepia e Moshes se Trete (Home for the Elderly) opposite Restaurrant Nju Spaces at the entrance to the Promenade.

To give blood you must be over 18 and under 65, more than 50kg, in good health, and to have not had a tattoo in the last 3 months. You will receive a blood test and medical check as well.

Please, please, please donate. It takes 15 minutes and it is a wonderful way to give back to Albania. For any questions, please contact me.
