A list of the missing victims of Albanian communism

Nexhmije Hoxha, the wife of Albania’s brutal dictator Enver Hoxha died on the 26 February 2020. She died in peace, at home in Laprake, Tirana while the families of those murdered the regime continue to search for the remains of their loved ones.

She was not just the wife of the communist leader, she was a power in her own right and held several prominent positions in the party. After his death, she continued to defend her husband’s actions and that of the regime and was never held to account for the crimes committed against humanity.

In 1991 she was arrested and then sentenced to nine years in prison for the embezzlement of ALL 750,000. The sentence was increased to eleven years but she was released from prison in January 1997.

After her release from prison, she published the memoirs of her life, again defending the horror inflicted on Albanian people and never once expressing regret.

Then on 13 February. 1995, she along with her deceased husband and other prolific figures of the regime were stripped of their honours decorations and titles.

The text of the document states that all the honours bestowed upon the high ranking members of the communist dictatorship were to be stripped due. to the “criminal act of genocide committed against the Albanian people”. It was signed by the at-the-time President Sali Berisha.

Here is a list of the names of 5087 Albanians who were murdered during the rule of Enver Hoxha, many of whose remains have never been found, or returned to their families.
