4 reasons to take a road trip with your partner

Road trips are amazing; they’re an easy, practical, and very adventurous way to see more of the Western Balkans, especially if shared with friends, family, or a partner.

Embarking upon a road trip with your partner is a great way to get to know each other better, have fun, and see as much of the area you’re travelling to as possible. They’re also a pretty cheap way of doing it, too. Especially in Albania where public transport can be a little unreliable, sometimes, jumping behind the wheel can be the most sensible option.

If you’re not convinced and think driving for hours on Albania’s winding roads has the potential to spark more arguments than a reality TV show, read on. I’ve compiled the top 4 reasons why taking a road trip with your loved one is a great idea

Make memories

When travelling somewhere you want to see more than just the hotel or resort, and hitting the road is the perfect opportunity to do so. The memories you’ll build together really are priceless.

Plus, you get to learn a shedload of new stuff about the country, their customs and road etiquette. For example, did you know it is illegal to drink anything while driving in Cyprus, even including non-alcoholic drinks such as water, milk, or fizzy drinks? The government feels that any kind of drinking distracts drivers from the road, apparently! In Albania however the rule seems to be that it is every man for themselves and there are no rules, you have been warned!

On that note, make sure to look out for any other crazy laws. You don’t want the memories you make to be for all the wrong reasons!

Gain trust

Picture this; you’re hitting Albanian Riviera, you’ve been driving for hours on end and are yet to find somewhere to stop and take a break. They’re convinced you’re on the right track and should be arriving somewhere in about 30 minutes, you think they’ve taken a wrong turn, but sure enough, you end up where you need to be, and right on time.

When away from home, especially when travelling for a long amount of time, it can be difficult to let someone else take the lead. But, you’ll learn to trust your partner more when on a road trip, and work together to make things happen.

Enjoy one another

When it’s just the two of you, it can go one of two ways. First you could end up arguing over anything and vowing never to do a road trip again. Or, the more likely scenario, you could relax and learn to appreciate each other’s company than ever before.

The experiences you’ll have on a road trip just the two of you will never come close to that of a standard resort holiday. It’s packed with adventure, with new opportunities around every corner (literally). You may even end up learning some new things about your partner, too. Asking questions makes for a pretty good road trip game when you’re 6 hours in and have exhausted Eye Spy, that’s for sure.

Try new things

You like one thing, your partner another. Well guess what, when travelling in a car you’re more likely to end up trying new things, and be more willing to compromise.

Trying new things is all in the fun of a road trip, stopping off in different towns, and taking a slightly different (and possibly scenic) route instead of the planned one if it means seeing more of the country in question. You won’t regret it!
