The hearts of several million Albanians were shattered on Saturday as Eurovision hopefully Jonida Maliqi crashed out of the finals in18th place. Whilst she did well to qualify, and the song was well received, Albania only managed 90 points and did not receive a single “douze points” from any other country- not even its Western Balkan neighbours.
Many, myself included, had high hopes for “Ktheju Tokes” this year- a soaring ballad with a distinctly Balkan vibe, Jonida’s vocals were amazing and it seemed like we were in with a chance of making the top 10 at least. But sadly this was not to be.
If you have literally no idea what I am talking about, check out the official video here.
Here are some of the best Twitter reactions to Jonida’s performance in Tel Aviv.
The BBC called Jonida a “true diva” and reminded us that Eurovision doesn’t have to be all about glitter and pop.
One viewer got a bit worried when he saw Albania and Macedonia trending on Twitter.
Proving the critics wrong.
Her biggest fan perhaps?
Her costume didn’t receive such rave reviews however…
UK-based smoothie brand had something to say about the stage show though.
As did this guy…
And this one…
Someone observed her likeness to pop singer Demi Lovato
Others said she was more Nigella Lawson
Lol
Oh dear.
Hmm.
Some decided to get really into the spirit of things.
Here:
As did Jonida herself.
She was widely praised for her powerful message.
And here…
And here…
And she rocked an LGBT flag dress on the day of Tirana Pride
And despite not winning, she received a lot of love!
Well done Jonida and better luck next year Albania! (you were robbed)
